Essay on legalizing marijuana
In the world today, marijuana is a hot topic. Everyone has an opinion about it and many opinions are negative towards legalizing it. I’d like to argue that we should legalize and tax marijuana.
First, why should we legalize and tax it? That would be like having cigarettes illegal but taxing them while still selling them to anyone who wants one. Why should we make the decision that people under 21 cannot possess or smoke weed? If they can’t drink alcohol (i.e., train vs. car accident), why should these young adults not be able to light up if they so choose? You say you don’t want children smoking or making bad decisions with drugs; however, what does pot do to our bodies other than make us hungry and lethargic? It doesn’t hurt us, it doesn’t cause violence in people, and we all know that if someone is “high,” they aren’t going to go out and beat or kill anyone.
We all use drugs in our everyday lives: caffeine in coffee and soda, nicotine in cigarettes and cigars. These two things do not prohibit 18-year olds from purchasing these items. If you disagree with pot being legalized for this age group because of the gateway drug theory (which has been proven false), I ask you this question: why can a 21-year old, who has already graduated high school and is legally an adult buy cigarettes when he/she still cannot possess marijuana; the substance that will most likely be used before cigarettes will be used?
You cannot and should not try to control what other people choose to do or put into their bodies; that is the definition of freedom. That’s like telling someone you can’t wear red because it clashes with my outfit. If someone wants to buy pot, let them! Taxing something that brings in a substantial income (think about all the businesses that would start up!) isn’t such a bad idea either. Especially when we could use this money for schools and roads. We’d all benefit from legalizing marijuana instead of continuing the unproductive war on drugs which has failed repeatedly and doesn’t seem likely to stop anytime soon.
People who smoke weed aren’t criminals and they shouldn’t be treated as such. The majority of people who smoke pot aren’t doing anything wrong other than getting high. What’s the harm in that? The legalization of marijuana would decrease our prison population, which is currently at an all-time high; allowing for more crime-fighting to happen.
I say we legalize and tax marijuana right now because it’s better for us as a society and less of a strain on our government. It’s time to start this war on drugs against something that doesn’t hurt anyone else but yourself.
Marijuana has been used as an illegal drug for decades. However, there are many benefits to legalizing marijuana. This essay will discuss the reasons why marijuana should be legalized.
First, marijuana is a safe and natural herb. It has been used for centuries to treat a variety of medical conditions. Marijuana is effective in treating pain, nausea, and other chronic conditions. In fact, several states have already legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Second, marijuana is a valuable cash crop. The U.S. government could earn billions of dollars in tax revenue by legalizing marijuana. In addition, the jobs and businesses created by the legal marijuana industry would generate millions of dollars in tax revenue.
Third, marijuana is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco. Alcohol and tobacco are both legal and highly addictive. Marijuana is not addictive and does not cause cancer or other serious health problems.
Fourth, marijuana is already being used illegally. The only way to reduce the harm caused by marijuana is to legalize and regulate it. It is much safer to allow people to purchase marijuana from licensed dispensaries than from criminals on the street.
Finally, marijuana prohibition has failed. The War on Drugs has cost taxpayers billions of dollars while doing nothing to reduce the availability or use of marijuana. It is time to legalize marijuana and stop wasting taxpayer money on a failed policy.

People are not always rational; if they were, then everyone would be buying their cigarettes by the carton instead of one pack at a time. We often do things simply because it brings us pleasure or, in this case, gets us high.
