The coursework is in the form of three pieces of reports (see detailed requirements in the below).

Deadline – 18th January 2021 (13:00 GMT)

Submission – via Blackboard – the submission point will be released nearer the deadline.

Late penalties will apply if the coursework is submitted late.

The coursework is an individual work – you must work on this yourself and not as a group. Your submission will be tested for originality via the Turnitin.

The maximum word allowance has been set for each of the three reports. You must include a word count for each report.

——————————————————————————————————————— You are expected to prepare three separate reports in accordance to the below requirements:

Report A (30%, maximum 800 words)

Discuss the portfolio theory and demonstrate how an investor would benefit from the diversification effect by holding a portfolio (assuming the portfolio only contains two assets).

  • Illustrations with numerical calculations based on your own estimated data are required. You need to set up your own estimations (e.g. the composition of your portfolio, the expected return and standard deviation of any contained individual assets, the correlation coefficients (or covariances) between the individual assets).
  • You need to show and explain all detailed steps for your numerical calculations.

Report B (20%, maximum 500 words)

You have just started a new role as a trainee accountant at BF LLP, an international accountancy firm, based in the UK.

A client of BF LLP, who plans to invest in supermarket businesses, has approached your manager for advice. After speaking to this client, your manager asked you to respond to this client in a report, to address the following:

  • Discuss the purpose and the meaning of the investment ratios in financial ratio analysis (select two investment ratios for your discussion). Illustrate each ratio with numerical calculations via using a real-world example (you can pick a relevant company by yourself), e.g. TESCO plc.
  • Discuss the limitations in financial ratios analysis (you only need to discuss two limitations). Illustrate how and why these limitations would affect the quality of financial ratios analysis. Your discussion needs to be supported by suitable examples.

Report C (50%, maximum 1200 words)

A German aerospace company, Space-Moon, is considering open a new aerospace manufactory company in Thailand. Space-Moon hired you, as an independent consultant, to assess whether this project is worth going ahead or not.

  • You are expected to apply appropriate approaches to conduct an investment feasibility study and produce an evaluation report. Different investment appraisal approaches (at least two) should be chosen and discussed.
  • Detailed discussions on how relevant elements/factors would potentially affect the evaluation results should be included.
  • Illustrations with numerical calculations based on your own estimated data are required. You need to set up your own estimations on the project related elements/factors (e.g. project length, project size, potential revenues, relevant costs, financing channels, tax rates, estimated cost of capital, exchange rates, and etc.).
  • You need to show and explain all detailed steps for your numerical calculations.

Presentation guidance

Make your report neat, concise and clear. Avoid long and complicated sentences. Your tables (if apply) should look nice and easy to understand. A good report will be one that has been able to sift through the vast amount of information and present only what is necessary and important.

Word count

The maximum word allowance has been set for each of the three report. This includes everything (main text, tables, calculations details, headings, appendices, and etc). The word count does not include information on a cover page (such as title, student number and bibliography) and also does not include the reference list if applies.

You must provide the word count for each of the three reports on the cover page of your coursework. There will be 10% reduction in mark for every 100 words above the maximum word limits.

Coursework Submission

The final coursework (including all three separate reports) must be submitted via one Word or PDF document on Blackboard by the deadline. Detailed guidance on how to submit your final coursework will announced nearer the time.

Extenuating circumstances

If you experience circumstances that may impact your ability to submit the coursework by the deadline, you must follow the guidance in the School of Economics Postgraduate Student Handbook.

Late submission of coursework

You should be aware that there are mark reductions penalties for coursework submitted late without extenuating circumstances:

For each working day late: Reduction of 10 marks (out of 100) per working day; Submitted over five working days late: The work is given zero marks.

Plagiarism guidance

You need to ensure the work submitted is your own work. This is an individual work and therefore you must not work on the coursework together with other students as a group. Your submission will be tested for originality (check the Plagiarism section via the Student Handbook).

Help and support

Because this is a coursework that counts towards your final unit mark, I can only offer you limited general help and support. If you would like to talk with me, please attend the drop-in live Q&A session on 17th Dec 2020 (9-10am GMT) or alternatively get in touch (liyi.zheng@bristol.ac.uk) and we will set up a MS team meeting at a convenient time.
