MGT6043 Accounting & Financial Management
Selecting a company quoted on the London Stock Exchange, acquire its annual report. Using this, market opinion, and relevant academic & business literature, prepare a report with the following structure:
a) Evaluate the strategy adopted the company by reference to the industrial sector in which it operates and its current position in the life cycle
b) Based only on its accounts, assess the financial performance of the company with regard to the strategic position identified in part (a). Explain special items/transactions involving significant sums
c) Examining market data, forecasts and independent commentaries, assess the financial potential and risk of the company.
d) Considering the capability of the board of directors, the strategic position in (a), its progress in (b), and the market’s view in (c), form a reasoned judgement as to whether you would invest in this company.
1) No two groups may choose the same company. A list of the 173 ‘AIM’ companies available has been uploaded to Blackboard. Your tutor will ensure you choose a company unique to each group.
2) Make sure you reference all sources of data, theory and opinion irrespective of whether they are from academic or empirical sources
3) Append the main three financial statements (Income Statement, Statement of Financial Position & Cashflow) of the most recent year to your report – failure to do so will result in a 5 mark penalty

Groups should contain four or five students.
Groups will be organised by the tutor in your third tutorial, week commencing November 9th. Your group ID will be the EPIC code of the chosen company. (Refer the instructions below for choosing a company)
Every person in a group is jointly responsible for the group report. This means that if any member of the group drops out of the course or fails to pull their weight, it is the responsibility of the remaining group members to make up for that deficiency.
If the group falls to three active members, please notify the module leader.
You are welcome to discuss with your tutor progress and issues connected with this assignment during its term. However please note that it is no use asking the tutor what to do – that is for your group to discuss and decide. Aspects relevant to this assignment will be demonstrated by tutors using the case company, Hotel Chocolat plc to help you understand an approach to analysis of real world data – however, your company will be different and you will need to adapt to the business context you choose. Higher marks are available for demonstrating the ability to ‘contextualise’ your understanding.
There will be a tutorial dedicated to this assignment in w/c December 14th. It is expected that all members of the group will be present at that tutorial. You will be expected to make a short, 5-minute presentation (maximum of 6 slides on PowerPoint) during the meeting on your progress and status, but not the actual results of your work in relation to the assignment’s requirements.
You will have the opportunity to raise issues connected with the technical requirements of the assignment as well as its organisation but your tutor will expect an affirmation that the team has planned its activities to ensure that it meets the assignment submission deadline.
You can form a group only with other students in your tutorial group.
You will form your groups in week 3 starting on Nov 9th. Your tutor will help you do this.
Once you have formed your group, select your company from the list provided and then post it on the Discussion Board. Follow the instruction provided on the Discussion Board.
Each Group need to make only one entry, one group member should do this on behalf of the group.
It will be on a first come first serve basis. In case of any dispute – the group that has posted first on the discussion board will get to work on the company.
If your group wants to work with a company that is not in the list of 173 companies, you may explore more companies here –
(Click the Download button on the Issuer list, and it will download an Excel file with the up to date list of firms listed on LSE).
(WE CAN NOT ALLOW FIRMS THAT ARE NOT LISTED ON LSE DUE TO DIFFERENCE IN ACCOUNTING STANDARDS AND CORPORTE GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS)
If you want to change your group company (Allowed till week 6), you may do so – but the group can pick only the firms that are still available (i.e. no other group has already picked it up)
