  1. Your conclusion is not limited to repeating the aforementioned facts. If there are a few specific points that you want to sum up in the conclusion, there are a few new words you need to use to get your idea together. Don’t just copy the thesis and facts that you have already said. Just show the problem in a new light.
  2. The focus of your writing should be a bit broader. It gives the reader a chance to reflect on the problem you discussed in your thesis and make their own decision. If you want to be successful, you have to make the reader think and want more.
  3. Your conclusion is where everything becomes clear. Bring all of your paths and directions in your paper to a logical conclusion. Show the reader how all these points work together.
  4. If your article is too complex, there is a simple but useful trick you can use to put the first and last paragraph of your writing together. Just use a sentence from the first paragraph and join it with a sentence from the last paragraph. In my case, it worked fine.
  5. Your conclusion can show the impact of your problem on people’s daily lives. Just clearly show the reader the implications of the problem and its solution.

Points to Avoid while writing a conclusion

  1. Forget the simple and boring summary. It’s just a common mistake made by many writers. Of course, there should be a few words that summarize the entire text, but it is not a complete conclusion. And if your essay isn’t too big, you can’t write a summary at all. Your text is not so big that the reader forgets everything he has learned from the beginning. There is no need to mention your points again at the end. This should reflect your previous words and facts. Also, if your assignment question is to get a judgment, your conclusion is the best place to do it.
  2. Any new information in your conclusion should be avoided. You must provide any facts that are supported by the text of your article. This is the final part and you have no chance of correcting it if you say something new on the subject. It’s just annoying and not convincing at all. Of course, one can talk about the future, but only consider what it might be.
  3. As a writer, you don’t need to apologize for everything you have written in your article. Also, apologizing when trying to look cool and convincing is forbidden. Your ending should be positive and strong. You shouldn’t regret what you wrote. If you have any, it means that you are unsure of your own words and that fact is spoiling all your work at one time.

Concluding strategies that do not work on a conclusion 

  1. Beginning with an unnecessary, overused phrase
  2. These may work in speeches, but they come across as wooden and trite in writing
    1. “in conclusion”
    2. “in summary”
    3. “in closing”
    4. “as shown in the essay”
  3. Stating the thesis for the very first time
  4. Introducing a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion
  5. Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest of the paper
  6. Including evidence (quotations, statistics, etc.) that should be in the body of the paper

Ineffective conclusions

  1. “That’s My Story and I’m Sticking to It”
    1. Restates the thesis and is usually painfully short
    2. Does not push ideas forward
    3. Written when the writer can’t think of anything else to say
    4. Example
      1. In conclusion, Frederick Douglass was, as we have seen, a pioneer in American education, proving that education was a major force for social change with regard to slavery.
  2. “Sherlock Holmes”
    1. State the thesis for the first time in the conclusion
    2. The writer thinks it would be more dramatic to keep the reader in suspense and then “wow” them with the main idea, as in a Sherlock Holmes mystery
    3. Readers want an analytical discussion of the topic in an academic style, with the thesis statement upfront
  3. “America the Beautiful”
    1. Draws on emotion to make its appeal
    2. Out of character with the rest of the paper
  4. “Grab Bag”
    1. Includes extra information thought of or found but couldn’t integrate into the main body
    2. Creates confusion for the reader
